Ditch the traditional, refined sugar-packed treats this Halloween and try this easy to make, wholesome alternative. Dates are a natural sweetener filled with a good dose of healthy vitamins and minerals. Whiz them up with a bit of milk and coconut oil and you have nature’s seriously good version of caramel sauce.

(makes 4 large caramel apples)

250g dates, pitted
60ml melted coconut oil
60ml milk of your choice (dairy, almond, coconut…)
1 tsp vanilla extract
pinch of salt
4 large granny smith apples


250ml desiccated coconut
200ml hazelnuts, chopped
75g good-quality dark chocolate, melted


4 apple twigs, washed, scrubbed lightly and dried



Soak dates in hot water for at least 30 minutes.

Add the dates, milk, coconut oil, vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt to a food processor. Process well until smooth, creamy and easy to spread.

Trim the bottom of the twigs at an angle and push into the top of the apples.

Spread the caramel over the apples with a butter knife or icing spatula. Press toppings lightly around the whole apple. Place on baking tray covered in greaseproof paper.

For the dark chocolate topping, you can either drizzle over or dip the bottom of the apple into the chocolate.

Place the apples in the fridge for about 1 hour until the caramel and chocolate sets.

For the adults: Serve with a glass or two of Negroni
